Warehouse

In logistics, a warehouses usually represents a node in the transport network where goods are stored temporarily before transfer to another route. But the term can also refer to the place on the premises of a company where stocks are stored. These stocks may be semi-finished or finished products, basic materials for further processing or spare parts. In some cases, warehouses play a role in the maturing process of the product, as for example in the case of whiskey, wine or cheese. There are many different types of warehouses to be found along the value chain, for example: Central warehouses - where articles from different production facilities are stored while they wait for distribution. Production warehouses - to be found at goods manufacturing companies, usually directly attached to the manufacturing department; used for the storage of finished products. High-bay warehouses - pallet warehouses up to 40 meters high; special machines and equipment are used like high-bay stackers and rack conveyor machines. Quarantine warehouses - where materials whose quality has not yet been checked are stored. Satellite warehouses - where pallets are stored in channels on rails; stocks are transported from A to B by special satellite vehicles; since only the front pallet in the channel is accessible, such warehouses are particularly suitable for small assortments with high turnover rates.

Warehouse receipt

When goods are stored in a warehouse, the warehouse keeper, who stores and looks after goods on a commercial basis, issues a certificate called a warehouse receipt to verify that the goods are in the warehouse. Non-negotiable warehouse receipts, which are documents of title, can only be issued by authorized warehouses. The most frequently used type of warehouse receipt is the registered warehouse receipt, which can be transferred by means of a declaration of assignment. The FIATA Warehouse Receipt (FWR) was created as a negotiable document for international trade.

Warehousing

Warehousing, also called inventory management, is concerned with all decisions that have an effect on stocks, for example what goods should be stored and in what quantity, or what goods need to be ordered to replenish stocks and how deliveries are to be arranged.

Waybill

A waybill is a shipping document commonly used in the transportation of consolidated consignments. Like a loading list, it lists the individual items, but also indicates what charges the receiving agent has to collect from the recipients. This document is also the basis for the return account of the receiving agent to the sending agent regarding costs incurred. Nowadays, remote data transmission is often used to forward waybills.
