09/03/2010 - Italy: Zero blood alcohol level for professional drivers

From now on, the Italian government will know no mercy with professional drivers who drink and drive. With effect from 1 August 2010, an amendment of the road traffic regulations (Codice della Strade) requires a zero blood alcohol level for professional drivers with driving licence classes C, D, and E. In the case of non-compliance with this strict ban on alcohol, drastic fines may be imposed when driving vehicles with a weight of more than 3.5 t. Up to a blood alcohol level of 0.49 parts per thousand, these fines range between € 155 and € 624. The amount doubles in the event of an accident. With 0.5 parts per thousand and more, the driving licence will be suspended. (Source: Conftrasporto / IRU (International Road Transport Union).
